MATUA LODGE ~ LOCAL ACTIVITIES, DINING & ENVIRONS
Local Activities and Dining
Matua Lodge is only 5 minutes drive to downtown Tauranga, with its excellent range of harbourside restaurants, historic sites, theatres, art and crafts and boutique shops. The neighbourhood shopping centres of Cherrywood and Matua are within easy walking distance.
Visit www.downtowntauranga.co.nz for a closer look at whats on offer.
There is easy access to the many local boardwalks and beach reserves in and around the harbour. Matua Saltmarsh is gorgeous and in easy walking distance. Mount Maunganui, with its famous surf and harbour beaches, hot salt water pools and wonderful walks up and around Mauao, is only another 10 minutes away by car or twenty by bike (there is a bike/walk trail to Mount Maunganui and local parks within viewing distance).
The coastal Bay of Plenty has one of the sunniest climates in New Zealand and stretches from Waihi Beach to Opotiki, along the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. Views of ocean surf, long white sandy beaches, sheltered harbour beaches, kiwifruit, avocado and citrus orchards, sheep and dairy farms abound. Thanks to shelter from the surrounding Kaimai range the climate is temperate and the focus is on enjoying the natural outdoor environment with activities such as fishing, diving, surfing, swimming, cycling, kayaking and walking. Other nearby attractions include the McLarens Falls area which is spectacular, Classic Flyers Museum, Papamoa Beach, Farmers markets/night market, Otumoetai Historic Pa Site and the Beach Road Reserve which is 500 yards away.
Tauranga is the region's main centre and is just an hours drive from Rotorua, Hamilton and Whakatane, two hours from Taupo and two and a half from Auckland. Lots to enjoy in our region. Please visit www.bayofplentynz.com to see the wonderful variety of activities on offer. Your hosts Julia and Graham will be happy to help you plan your day.
